Grab a good pair of shoes, some snacks,
and your favorite camera and join the group as
we make make our way from Washington Square Park
in Greenwich Village, up Broadway to Union
Square Park, and then on to Madison Square Park.
These historic parks are compelling in their own
right, but the street routes too will
allow us a chance to engage in some serious
street photography and encounters with city
architecture.
We'll be looking for photographs of people in
real situations - jazz musicians busking
outdoors, a worker making fresh pizza, as seen
through a neighborhood store window, book lovers
scouting titles at the Strand Book Store,
the masses of pedestrians crisscrossing at
traffic intersections - and the diverse shapes
of the city: ornate buildings, tall statues,
yellow cabs and bicycles, reflections in glass,
handwritten menu boards, and the meandering
walkways of city parks.
As we walk the approximately one-and-half-mile
route, I'm going to share with you some specific
ways to up the quality of your photography -
techniques you can use when traveling, visiting
museums, hiking in the woods, and photographing
family and friends.
But technique aside, there's a philosophy to the
Art of Photography. I'll be revealing some of
mine and you can choose what to incorporate into
your own approach. As a photographer and
teacher, I want you to think differently the
next time you head out with your camera - and I
want us to discover more of this city, on foot
and in all seasons. Walk Manhattan 4 is part of
a series of Manhattan photo walks that I lead
(see Walk Manhattan 1, Walk Manhattan 2, and Walk Manhattan 3
itineraries). Sign up for my class mailing list to hear about
new dates for workshops and photo outings.
Hope you can join us!
