Judah S. Harris Pesach Newsletter graphic

It's almost April, but no extensions on this one. The Pesach holiday is here.

If you've never seen my 2007 photo essay
Visit to the Matzah Bakery, or haven't seen it recently, take a look and appreciate why you're paying $20/lb for this Passover delicacy (whole wheat and spelt are more).

What's all this about "freedom?" (I can still hear Gilda Radner's famous Saturday Night Live
  Emily Litella intonations of "what's all this fuss about...")

I share some ideas in my essay
Gaining Our Freedom Each and Every Year, and address our obligation to personally experience an event that we all know took place more than 3000 years ago.

PHOTO ESSAY: Visit to the Matzah Bakery

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
matzah bakery thumbWalk into any matzah factory in the weeks just before Pesach and you'll be greeted by rows of brown cardboard cartons, each packed with one and two-pound boxes of handmade matzah.
At bakeries such as the Charedim Shmurah Matzoh Bakery in Brooklyn, NY, where these photographs were taken, the air is filled with the smells of baked matzah, even burnt matzah, and a quick pace of activity and chores mingles with the sounds of a number of languages: English, Yiddish, Hebrew, Russian.
Three years ago, I visited five Brooklyn bakeries in the weeks before the holiday and spent four hours photographing at this one in Boro Park - less than two weeks before Pesach.
Really, I'd like to do a short film and I have another Brooklyn bakery in mind that has all the elements I'm looking for. The film will need sponsors at different levels. If you'd like to be involved, please be in touch with me directly.
ESSAY: Gaining Our Freedom Each and Every Year: A Pesach Message
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Gaining Our Freedom thumbThe Exodus from Egypt took place more than 3000
years  ago and yet we refer to Pesach as "Zman
Chairusenu, The Time of Our Freedom," even
acknowledging our obligation to consider ourselves
as having "just left" the slavery of Egypt.

For those of us wondering how this could possibly be
meant literally, a closer look at the meaning of true
freedom suggests an answer; one that can free us
in any time or place where we might find ourselves personally situated.

Bonei Olam in Lawrence
Bonei Olam

To raise funds to help couples deal with a range of fertility issues, Bonei Olam volunteers in the Five Towns held an Evening of Inspiration & Song in December at the home of the Lowingers. This is the fourth Bonei Olam event that I've photographed. You can watch a slideshow of the event to see how the evening transpired and meet the couple that have had two children with the help of the organization.

Rabbi Shmuley Boteach at MJE

Rabbi Shmuley Boteach lectured on relationships at Manhattan Jewish Experience (a popular NYC outreach organization) in November. He said what we well know: there's a problem with singles and their dating habits. He didn't blame the men, but he did assign a bit more of the responsibilty to the male gender. He was straight, often funny, and this was the first time I heard him in person.
